Update: dog is fine, apparently these are common, thanks for all your help.
11 year old female lab just had about a 2 minute seizure. 1st ever. Called emergency clinic and they said there isn't much we can do or need to do unless she has more or longer seizures. Called my vet and he hasn't called back yet. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. She's up and moving but really disoriented. Won't lay down just kind of pacing around and panting

Our chihuahua always had seizures. She lived for 7 years. She died a few months ago.
One old lady told me to give the dog syrup when she would have a seizure. It appeared to help.
Of course, ask your vet.

Got her to lay down. Seems to be doing ok. Planning on taking her into vet in morning. Could still use any advice from vets or anybody who has dealt with similar experience.

Thank you. Just gonna sit up with her and make sure she recovers from this one and hope she doesn't have another one

Not what you want to hear but one of my dogs passed from a seizure last year. I couldn't get her to stop seizing. I will never forget the sound she was making and watching her last breath.

My parents have a really old dog who has seizures. He snaps out of it.
Just don't let the animal suffer. Quality of life over quantity.

Yeah. This was really scary. She is Super active and has never had a serious health issue. Heard her start thrashing around and grabbed her up, she was biting at the air and her eyes were crooked. Lasted about 2 minutes. She couldn't stand up on the slippery hard woods and was whining. Finally got her up, she went outside and used the bathroom and now shes laying by the bed. Seems to be ok. She just had a dental cleaning with anesthesia a week ago so I'm thinking that might be the trigger. We have a great vet so Im sure he can help us get her diagnosed and treated tomorrow, just want to make sure Ido anything I can for her tonight.

My dog has had these problems for a couple of years. If she has one, best thing to do just let it lie down and relax, and drink some water to calm down and hydrate until you can talk to your vet. Just try to contact him/her as soon as possible to have your dog take some pills. Those pills work pretty well so as long as your dog takes them, the seizures should stop. My dog has not had another seizure after taking medicine.

Thank you. We put a call into our vet. Will take her in in the morning and get a diagnosis and treatment plan. Really appreciate everyone's advice. She's seems to be fine now

It only took one time for my little one... hard to relive that Saturday morning.
I hope it works out for you

Our lab had his 1st seizure around 12 yrs. Just kept him calm, rested & hydrated after each and made sure he was breathing well and had good motor functions. Just lost hmm last year at 15 yrs
Brought him in just for the ride when kitty had his annual exam. Vet looked at the way his back legs moved (or didn't) and said it was time. Some neurological thing that would eventually paralyze his esophagus and he would die from inability to breathe.
Long story - get him checked by vet. Probably ok as long as he can breathe and move properly. Watch him long term and ask vet what to look for.
Good luck!

Thanks. I thought she was going. Breathing was labored towards the end of the seizure and then she just came back to life. I Know she's a dog but it was one of the scarier scenes I ever witnessed.

I have 2 labs and they're both 11, I know they won't live forever but if they weren't gray haired you'd think they were still 3 or 4 years old by the way they act. This was totally out of the blue. Never had any issues with her.

I really think it may have something to do with her recent anesthesia for the dental work. We shall see what the vet thinks tomorrow.

My 8 year old Havanese started having violent seizures when she was around 4 - they lasted at least 2 to 3 minutes followed by a bowel movement and sometimes vomiting, this would occur at least 2 or 3 times a month. My vet ran various test over a two week period and put her on Phenobarbital 60MG/ML 0.05ml twice daily. It took about 6 months for it to finally kick in. She has maybe 3 or 4 light seizures a year now. The downside to this is liver function, your dog is 11 - I am sure they will have to monitor her along with the residue from the Phenobarb with quartley blood test. Good luck.

My aunt has three chihuahuas that have seizure. She takes a syring with out the needle and puts a little Karo syrup in it Then squirting a little water in their mouths and the snap right out of it Not a lot to Karo tho

Sorry you had to see your pup go through that. Those two minutes probably lasted forever. She will be out of it for a few hours once it's over, but she should be fine. If she were to have another seizure that won't stop, bringing her in on emergency would be needed for medication. Your vet in the am should be able assist you from there and make a plan for you. Hope that helps, good luck

Sounds like an isolated event based on anesthesia. Trust me when I say that this incident was more traumatic for you than her.

You're doing the right thing by just keeping an eye out for now. It could very well be the only one she ever has, or it could be a seizure disorder which can be treated. (One of my rescues has a seizure disorder that we treat with meds.) My vet told me that even though there may be weird noises and some confusion afterwards, dogs don't feel pain during a seizure. Hope everything goes well.
