They lost pretty much an entire generation in WW1. Then they folded under the blitzkrieg of WWII because the Germans were sneaky and they couldn't stand up to the war machine (and really rightfully so). They still put up a good fight in Vietnam regardless. They might not have won any wars but they aren't bitches either.

They lost in WW2 because they were negligent in their preparations for it because they assumed their uber fortifications would give them an unassailable defensive position.

For all the "we bailed France out of WW1" talk, it's like people didn't realize that France held the floodgates closed till the US entered. They basically took it on the chin from Ali for years and didn't throw in the towel and didn't give up the Western front.
