On my kids Xbox one the direct tv hdmi is plugged into the Xbox.
The xbox then controls everything.
even the TV

ETA: You can tell them that you are switching because of lack of streaming with ESPN and the like and they will give you a discount.

Definitely don't do that since they have it now.

Yeah, my XBOX One turns on/off my TV and sound system when I turn on/off the XBOX. It actually works very well and you can use the Xbox guide or the provider guide/remote. If you have a Xbox One and aren't using this you are doing it all wrong.
