Shower retrofit. Any opinions appreciated.

Ill keep it short. Tub only with tile 4 ft up the walls. Cant match the color and wanting to turn it into a shower on the cheap as Ill be moving in the next few years and it probably won't pay me back for a complete reno in my area. The tub is pink with the old pink and blue crap from the 70's. Looking to install a remote mount shower head wand setup.
Options:
1. Can i use an epoxy clear coat the 2 feet above the tile for splashing?
2. Lexan and caulk the seams well? How to attach Lexan as to not look shitty on the backside?
3. Curtain ring suspended from ceiling to wrap the shower area and protect walls.
I like the epoxy idea best... if it would work...

You can buy pre-molded tub surrounds from home depot or lowes that will fit your needs, just remove the tile but leave the sheetrock behind them, then liquid nail the surround to the sheet rock.

Assuming you have 30 x 60 tub, And considering resale, I do the tub/shower insert

Remove Sheetrock and run plumbing up for shower head, I'd use green board at least on wall you cover plumbing back up with. If you can find a trim kit to match valve on existing tub faucet and matching shower head/valve,you can get all this done for around a grand if you do demo yourself. Otherwise you're looking 2k.
For another grand you do a nice ceramic on the floor, go with a remnant granite with undermount sinks and matching faucets. I'd be shocked if you couldn't pull 3k out of a completely reno'd master bath.

Thanks sir but unfortunately its a big bath and they tiled everything. Walls around the toilet and the front section of the bathroom as well (its a partitioned bath with a door seperating the "makeup" area). Thee is pink and blue tile everywhere, 4 ft up the walls inside the entire area. I'd be afraid at once I removed the tub and tile then I'd have to gut all the tile and sheetrock everything along with the pink sink to match

For resale, best option is to get rid of that shite.

Cheapest option if you do not want to retile. Installing tile is not that difficult. I had never done it before and redid an entire bathroom to include floors, tiling a shower, and wall around a separate tub.

Mexicans love to demo and reframe walls and hang sheetrock. It sounds like a 3 day 3k job.

I painted over the pink tile in mine. Won't last forever but two years later it still looks great.

Installing tile is Legos for grown ups. I find it relaxing. Only real difficult art aspect to it is crooked walls, but a little extra thin-set in those spots and you're gold

Sounds like what I did last year. I ripped out all the tile. It was those tiny 1 inch tiles everywhere and 4 feet up the walls and 5 feet above the old tub. A rental jackhammer and an afternoon and all of that is gone. Get some plastic garbage can and shovel it into there and haul it outside. I ripped the tub out as well since I was turning it into a laundry room and half bath but the demo is the same. Then get a tub/shower kit and mount that. Drywall is easy to get installed. A couple Mexicans and a day or two for them to hang it and tape/mud the seams and paint it. Looks great. Buy all the materials and let them install after you do the demo.

yes, you can paint sheetrock and it will hold up for a short time. i did it for 2 years while waiting to renovate. i had no problem. i would use a good exterior gloss paint and make sure the junction with tile is caulked before painting. it won't hold up forever, but it should work for a while.

That's what I was wondering. I was winding to go with an epoxy to work better I would think. I would like to rip it all out but I am not sure I would get the value back at all with the layout. It really needs an entire layout. It looks great for it age but just needing a shower. Thanks
