Don't understand why this would piss Chavis off. Would he really want to stay under contract with LSU still if he had no idea who his new boss would be?

Apparently Chief wanted loyalty to the school and not the coach. He got burned by TN when Fulmer was canned. If Alleva lost one of the top Defensive Coordinators in college football for this goofy "what if" scenario then he is a fool.
Get him signed and work thru it with Chief of Miles does leave.

Coaching staff at LSU seems too cozy. Miles hasn't outright fired anyone has he? It's always been a point them to the next place kind of thing, correct?

No, but he would want to be paid a minimum of one year of his contract like most DC & OCs, and not six months like a position coach. I doubt that's what pushed him out, but it was a ridiculous move that could have been seen by a slap in the face.
