Francis is trying to improve the church's image. Supporting the consensus on climate change, and getting out in front on it, is a deliberate effort to make the church appear pro-science IMO.

Of all the science to support, he supports the completely wrong one? Why not come out in favor of evolution? That is a much wiser and safer start.

What I know of him now is that he helped bring down the USSR, the bastion of communism, the greatest evil of our time. I do not know of what else he might have done.

If he advocated for socialism and climate change policies, then I will need to adjust my opinion of John Paul II.
But you've said that the church has no business influencing governments. Did you mean that the Pope has no business taking stands you disagree with?

Because the Church already has an official position on that.

I'm pretty sure the church has agreed with evolution for awhile.

I'll remember this the next time they pass the collection plate.

It's an interesting event in many ways. Some of our Catholic high ranking govt officials (cough)Scalia seem hell bent on injecting religion into government (cough)Boehner. If the RCC supports efforts to combat climate change, will US social conservatives cherry pick which beliefs they support? Birth control good; Climate Change bad.

It is fantastic . . . and so very appropriate

There are allowances when an evil like the USSR exists. But to attack capitalism, the one thing most responsible for the prosperity of developed countries, or to embrace climate change, a movement proven to be false and guided by nefarious motivations, does not reach the level of taking down an evil like the USSR. The pope at the time of WWII was apparently silent on Hitler, and this was wrong. But the pope using his position to influence world events should be used sparingly. I don't know of an evil government large and powerful enough in the world today that warrants the pope's influence. Certainly not the United States, the bastion of capitalism, for crying out loud!

I'm not sure why Galileo is "so very appropriate".

A gotcha from 450 years ago?

This hasn't happened.

He hasn't attacked the United States. And I'd say China certainly fits the criteria. China is a really, genuinely evil country.

Was an hour long special back when he was with ABC. Can't remember if the billion dollar discussion was part of that, but I don't think it was. I vaguely remember that discussion when he was talking with Larry Elison.

by the way, this is that special with the turner-charity issue

go to around 35 minutes and they get into it, as well as the "Michael Milkin v. Mother Teresa" discussion

It sounds like much more of an indictment of the people in the system than the system itself.

since capitalism is based in free trade, which is based in a bunch of individuals working together, "the system" is the people

Perhaps he thinks the people should use more restraint?

one hard part is that "greed" is a multi-layered concept.

Exactly. Greed can include people who game the welfare system, or the Wall Street fat cats who get the taxpayers to cover their bad bets, or the Sandra Flukes of the world who want to take money from struggling working families to fund their own lifestyle choices.

Especially considering what the scientific establishment did to Semmelweis--whihc was much worse and much more recent.
