83 was much deadlier because
1 cold front came faster than expected
2 north wind came about 10-15 knots harder than anticipated
Nearly everyone that died that day died because they got stuck where they were.
Also th lessons of 83 where still fresh in the outdoor media reports.
That day in 83 was one of the most bizarre days I have had....
89 was colder and colder longer.
Never forget seeing temperature drop 9 degrees on a bank sign in algiers while we were getting donuts..
Lessons learned at others expense saved my life a week later - along w USCG....

Very nearly got stuck in the marsh near the game wardens camp out of Bayou Dularge area. Water dropped so fast, had to pull the bateau across a lengthy mudflat using our 2 mushroom anchors. No one had gloves and our hands were some kind of raw from the cheap poly rope we used back then. Likely would have died had we not made that pull and stayed stuck.
