Seems like maybe this sort of off-season stuff is more your forte
Two fold reason. First, I don't like to "jinx" the season by talking about it too much while it's going on. Second, I definitely like looking at the team building aspect a lot more than the in season coaching aspect.

And thanks!

it also pushes the money out of year 1 of the contract. with byrd if it was signing bonus the hit last year wouldve been higher. doing it now runs the money year 2-6 instead of 1-5
Definitely, especially in the case of Byrd and Galette who actually have 5 more years left(the max you can spread signing bonus money).

Many teams that sign players to 6 year contracts have a roster bonus in year two that is planned to become a signing bonus spread over the final five years.

Also, I see people always talk about kicking the can but then think that it all just adds up one year. Not how it works.

As long as the player is signed and you have built in flexibility you can keep kicking the can and spreading out that hit instead of having it fall in one year.

Now you can plan to intentionally do a one year "cap hell" season, such as when Brees hangs it up and we have to reboot anyway. But I don't think we will go that route. We have good pieces that still need to be paid and we can keep adding as long as we remain flexible.

Edit:
And yes for the second year in a row Haralson was a huge bargain for us. Hopefully we can get him and Humber back cheap. They aren't flashy players and I don't see many teams pursuing them in the first place, much less for a large sum.
