Let's say Byrd looks like he won't heal. If we had given him $6 mil more signing bonus up front then that is gone(dead money). If we cut him because he can't play, we save the $6 mil.

That's a big reason we are giving Galette a huge roster bonus. Had he sucked or gotten seriously injured this year, we could save $12.5 mil.

it also pushes the money out of year 1 of the contract. with byrd if it was signing bonus the hit last year wouldve been higher. doing it now runs the money year 2-6 instead of 1-5
