overthecap has a tool that you can play around with. Otherwise, askthecommish has a decent amount of info on the salary cap. Simply understanding what happens when a player with guaranteed money left on their deal is cut will go a long way.

Plus learning about the cap and ways to tinker with it over the last two years.
I haven't even talked about turning base salary into signing bonus yet, which was a trick we used often at least 3 years in a row prior to last year. We decided to actually do cuts instead last year.
