I think Sonic Youth was more responsible for todays sound than the pixies in the 80s but thats just my opinion.
Sonic Youth was on SST. They were absolutely a punk band. They came out of the post-hardcore scene and also part of the No Wave scene, which gave us industrial heavyweights like Helmet and Big Black (also punk bands, BTW). No wave lives on in bands like the Swans. Also, heavily punk-influenced.
Indie rock, hate to break it to you, comes out of punk. they are practically inseperable. Even REM was originally classified as "post-punk" band and came out of the punk scene.

Also, don't forget the Love Ways and Soft Effects EPs from Spoon... great! Sure they started to dip in quality and got more formulaic after Kill The Moonlight, but those first few records were great!
And come on, the two singles ... Agony Of Lafitte and Lafitte Don't Fail Me Now... after Elektra dropped them are classics..
Then again, I like MM okay too..
I'd say the comparison is that they are both bands with indie rock roots, that have experienced mainstream success, from approx the same time frame... i think by and large, you are appealing to a common fanbase..
