A) Missionary work is a laudable thing, IMO. The work is typically hard and the intentions typically good.
B) Having known/encountered a lot of them, I understand the fundraising issue. I've given money to plenty of missionaries, and I've refused plenty too. A number of the latter category just struck me as people who saw it as a way to fund their dream, rather than pursue any specific call. The ones I'm prone to give to are the type where everything they have is already in the pot, and they need additional help.
C) Don't worry about their kids. The State Department and CIA are stocked with missionary kids. They'll get into great colleges too.
