I don't really have a problem with this, but I just don't understand why these groups feel the need to actively display their hatred of faith.

They do this to make a point about religious freedom in America. If you can display one religion on public grounds you should be able to show them all. Trolling the Bible thumpers just happens to be the cherry on top.
