From a die hard golfer:

1. It's expensive as frick compared to soccer, basketball, football, etc...
2. Courses are insanely expensive to maintain/operate which leads to exclusivity and point #1
3. It takes half a day to play a round
4. It's still seen as a nerdy sport

Also, to be consistently DECENT at golf, one has to devote an incredible amount of time/effort beyond just a Saturday round with your bros. Hours upon hours monthly have to be spent around a chipping/putting green as well as the range. This is why when you meet someone who consistently shoots in the low 80s or especially high 70s, they do not have ANY other hobbies. Golf is all they can do. Because of the cost and time commitment to be good at it. And the younger generation's attention span doesn't lend itself to that kind of thing either. People are all about "the experience" now and want to try everything. Problem with that way of thinking is that you never get good at something or master anything.
