WASHINGTON (AP) -- Unhappy Republicans say Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has given President Barack Obama a present this holiday season - a gift certificate good for confirmation of 12 judicial appointments, not long after the voters had delivered the Democrats a lump of coal in midterm elections.

quote:

But there was no dissent that Democrats, who must turn over power to Republicans in January, were in position to confirm not only the judges, but 11 other appointees before the Senate wraps up work for the year.

Among them are nominees that Republicans have sought to block for two relatively high-profile posts. They are Vivek Murthy, confirmed late in the day as surgeon general, and Sarah Saldana to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency that will oversee the new administration policy on immigration that Cruz wants to defund.

At the root of the dispute lay a combination of the Senate's all-but-indecipherable rules, Cruz's attempt to use their murky corners to his advantage, and a bipartisan desire of many lawmakers to finish work for the year and return home for the holidays.

"My concern about the strategy he employed is that it has a result he didn't intend," Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said of Cruz' maneuverings on Friday night, when he sought to force a vote on Obama's immigration policy. Among the consequences, she said, would be confirmation of a number of appointees who are controversial, including some to "lifetime judicial" posts.

Some officials said Cruz was personally informed by GOP aides that Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid was primed to take advantage if he went ahead.

Mike Lee also had a big part in this as well. Thanks to them, we now have at least ten more Obama appointees serving as federal judges for life and a complete radical that's purely political and unqualified as hell serving as Surgeon General.

Democrats seem to be enjoying thanking Cruz for his assist. Sen. Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, tweeted that he “[w]as worried Dr. Vivek Murthy might not get confirmed but thanks to @TedCruz, looks like he will.” And Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson tweeted, “I mean this sincerely: thank you, Senator Cruz.” Talking Points Memo has more detail here on the Cruz love that emerged from Democrats’ ranks over the weekend.

quote:

Republican senators tore into Cruz and Lee, according to Politico. Sen. Kelly Ayotte said their strategy was “ridiculous,” Sen. Jeff Flake called it “counterproductive,” and Sen. Susan Collins told Cruz he was “going to make everybody miserable.”

Ted Cruz did Obama a big favor

The Senate’s confirmation of Vivek Murthy to surgeon general on Monday gave Democrats a chance to troll GOP firebrand Ted Cruz on twitter.

Implying the Republican senator paved the way for a vote after over 500 days without a surgeon general, the leadership staff of Senate Democrats, David Axelrod and the communications director for Sen. Harry Reid were among those who "thanked" Cruz.

Disgruntled Republicans said they felt confident that Reid's rank and file would not have been willing to remain in Washington in that case, and only four or five nominees would be confirmed instead of 23.

The repubs had an ironclad wink and a nod from Reid. Cruz upset the apple cart. Reid would have never dared to keep the Senate open til Christmas Eve again. Also since Cruz was a firm supporter in the Dem's evoking of the nuclear option, he's clearly the guilty bastard in all this.

Now the USA has to deal with whacky libtard judicial appointees, and a goofball surgeon general. Gee, we've never had to face that problem before. BWAAAA!

All those repubs who railed against Obama's amnesty policy can't wait to restore honor and tradition in the form of fillibuster rules. That way when the amnesty question comes up again, they can blame the Democrats.

I think Reid would have done it anyways as one last FU to the GOP.

How any judicial appointments has Obama had during his presidency? Seems like a lot more than usual in a presidency but I could be wrong

If you recall, Ted Cruz also led the effort to shut down the government last year. In that instance and in this one, there was no winning play for the GOP...it was only to raise his profile at the expense of the American taxpayer. He raised $1.3 million during the shutdown quarter. What a patriot!

I don't hate Sarah Palin or Dick Cheney, but I hate Ted Cruz.

If you really think that Harry Reid couldn't have gotten these guys confirmed without Cruz/Lee then you are crazy. There is no filibuster for judicial nominees anymore, thanks to the nuclear option. Reid could have called a vote for those nominees at any time.
