The market does make sense. I'm not talking about the hardcore, "move off the grid, permanently" people, but think of all the high-profile public disasters, massive F4 and F5 tornadoes, Katrina, Rita, Sandy - wherever you live in the U.S., you can have some sort of crisis or emergency that causes you to evaluate whether or not staying in your home (mudslides, wildfires, loss of infrastructure, etc.) and, if you need to leave in a hurry, this sort of planning the basics - food, water, medical supplies, temporary shelter, basic set of tools, duct tape, weapons, ammo, alternative power supplies, fuel, etc., is not wasted effort. It can possibly save your life - or at least get you a jump on a crisis response.

Everyone would be well served by contemplating, and doing some minimal planning for an unexpected crisis.
