what happens to a companies stock if they get bought out by another, larger company?
I can speak to the legal side a bit, it depends on what kind of sale, asset v. stock for example.
If you google that it gives you the outcomes with regard to the stock.
Also look at a biz law class that covers basic merger and acquisitions. There are some guys here that can talk about share valuations, asset discounts etc.

Does the iPhone now take oil to run? I don't know wtf Apple is dropping like a ton of bricks for

Back in i think 1998 oil was around $12 a barrel

Yes. I remember $0.68/gal gas, those were tough times having grown up in the oil patch and my dad in the business.

Commonly, the target's share price goes up due to a takeover premium usually being incorporated. For the buyer, it generally depends on whether or not the deal is accretive to earnings.

I know that oil is at a rare low
What? In the early 80's it went from 30bbl to 9bbl. Rare low at around 60?

The drilling contractors are saying this will be a 2 year lull in drilling. A lot of rigs going off contract or unable to get a new one.
I am gonna wait until the summer to see where things stand. I don't think some contractors will make it out of this one alive. Most are in debt more than ever and still building new rigs without contracts.
I know I am not an investor expert but I have worked in the industry for almost 25 yrs. There will be some great opportunities to buy drilling contractors stock.
I am leery of buying small producers because there will be several that get bought out. All the big names will do fine and they have the money to cherry pick these fields.
This will be a great opportunity to make some money!

So as someone who works in the industry, who do you like/expect to survive in the downturn? Care to speculate on it? I'm long oil in general in several ways, and got into SDRL a month or two ago. Bought again last week and expect it to go under 10 where I will buy more.

Transocean, Noble, and Diamond are in pretty good shape. I think ENSCO will be hurting, they have several rigs coming off contract. There are several foreign companies that will get hurt bad. This will give some of the stronger ones a chance to buy up rigs. I look for Noble especially to buy a company or rigs. They have downsized recently and this is a way for them to build back up.
For a long term investment keep an eye out for Petrobras. It's hard for me to trust them but the potential is there, it just may be 4 or 5 more years down the road. Their stock was already low because of the corruption going on inside the company, it's around $7 now.

I see Petrobras sliding another 30-50% and then im jumping in

Appreciate the insight. I had NE and RIG on watch for about a year and chose to go another direction. If they all go to 10 bucks I may just end up with a basket of drillers.
PBR I watched for years it seems and eventually gave up as it got so negative. It became a train I didn't want to try to step in front of. If it keeps sliding maybe it's worth gambling on.

CVX is probably less than an hour from falling through two year old support.

CVX at a 4.5% yield is when I jump in

I've been eyeing VDE for a couple of months now, but I'm holding off as I doubt it has reached its floor. Here's a snapshot:

Looks like the next support on VDE is in the 90's... I don't see how I could lose long term even at today's entry point
