I would think if a serial killer truly wanted to kill and not get caught they would greatly expand the area in which they select their random victims and change up the actual method.

The police would never know they were looking for a serial killer if there were never any similarities to the crimes.

There are probably serial killers on the loose right now.

oh absolutely...larger kill zone, dump the bodies a far ways away...it wouldn't be hard; however, serial killers kill because of a compulsion, they don't start with "I want to plan a series of murders with the sole intent of fooling the cops"

you change up the victims, the place, where you dump, how you kill and it's impossible to nail the guy unless they jack off and leave fingerprints. Kind of like the ripper, you'd have to catch him in the act.

Impossible to know and that's why I don't believe the statistics...it's hard enough finding one you know about, but it's harder to find the ones you don't (which I suspect is the case more often than not)

Most estimates are that there are at least 15 and up to 50 or 100 uncaught serial killers in the US at any one time. Of course there will be many who are never caught.

Look at the Long Island serial killer - guy has killed at least seven (IIRC) and probably more in just the last seven or eight years. They have no clue who that is.

As powerful as forensics are, they are still tools created by humans, and as such, there will be people who figure out ways around them. It's the same thing in high tech warfare.

I wonder how many over the road truck drivers are serial killers. They have an easy set up. They are constantly moving, lots of easy targets (lot lizards), drive by hundreds of places almost daily to get rid of a body.
