Got Little Dong 1 the Savage Axis 243 for Christmas last year and so far it's put down three dear with no problem. Very little blood, but that's not really an issue with good shot placement - the farthest one we had to retrieve was only 50 yards. I prefer it over my Ruger 270 granted i'll be shooting not farther than 100 yds.

The first gun I hunted with was a 20ga single shot crack barrel. After a season with that my dad bought me a Remington youth model .243. I've killed more deer with that gun than anything else. Always shot 100gr BTSP.

From 10-17 I shot everything behind the shoulder. A lot of the deer found had no exit holes, and a minimal entry wound. The final straw was on a Saturday morning hunt I shot a good 8pt (110-115") and found ZERO blood. Everyone told me it was a clean miss, but I kept looking. Found the first blood 100 yards on a tree he brushed up against, shot was behind the shoulder middle of the chest deer ran 250+ yards.

I don't deny that caliber posses the energy needed to kill deer but I don't like that if a deer runs the blood trail isn't always reliable.

I started to do this with my youngest, instead i took my 444 and put a pound of lead in the stock. He shot it and it has minimal recoil.
