As you'd expect, if you've read any rumors anywhere on the internet, there's a high likelihood we know about it and have done some digging on it. There have been STRONG rumblings the last 72 hours or so revolving around Michigan's chances with Harbaugh.
On Friday, I talked to three different sources, two of which are the best contacts I've made while going through this search. They have reiterated some of the stuff that others have read, and all three believe that Michigan will end up getting their man. Again, it's possible that this is a chain of people buying into the hysteria surrounding the possibility this happening. However, after the Vegas numbers making some waves this afternoon, I felt more comfortable in making it public that there are people I trust who believe there's a good chance that this all goes down.
Sean Payton: New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton's name has surfaced recently as well as a potential candidate for the Michigan job, most notably by Sports Illustrated writer and former Michigan Daily member Ben Estes.
The only reason I'm following up on this is because of a tip we got way back after Michigan lost to Rutgers earlier in the fall, once the heat started to ramp up big time for athletic director Dave Brandon. A source reached out to me when there were questions as to whether or not Michigan would hire someone outside of the program to potentially replace Brandon. The one name we heard immediately was Brad Bates at Boston College. That same source then made the following statement: "Do not be one bit surprised if Sean Payton is the second phone call made by Bates if he's brought in for Brandon. The two know each other, and Payton has expressed private interest in the Michigan job in the past."
That backs up Estes's claim. Do I think Payton would be a serious candidate for the job? Probably not, but I don't believe it's simply crap being thrown against the wall as it has been in other instances.
Miles: We're ignoring the fact that LSU head coach Les Miles told the Tigers' top 2015 recruit that he's not going anywhere. There's literally nothing else he could tell a player of Kevin Tolliver's ability at this juncture in the recruiting process. We also maintain our stance that if Michigan truly pursued Miles for the job, that he would eventually take it.
One interesting note regarding Miles comes from the Michigan side of things. I talked to a couple sources close to the team that said the players would be "ecstatic" if Miles was the hire and that they would love to play for him.
