Riley was the third choice. Better question is what is Mike Riley thinking?

Nebraska needs to hire someone with a lot of recruiting charisma and success. I don't see how Mike Riley is going to give them that.

I think he was smart to get out while he still had a shot. He was a dark horse candidate who's name came up often 6-8 years ago because OSU was more competitive and winning consistently. Now, Oregon has left them in the dust, the PAC 12 has finally started getting some depth, and that left him in a no-win situation. There is no way they can compete with Phil Knight's money or the larger program to the south.

He had a really good run there, but the deck is now stacked against them. Their next coach is going to have a hell of a time keeping that program relevant.
