I'm kinda going with this thinking also.
If you give the kid the deer he hasn't learned the importance of making a good shot on a deer.
I understand the disappoinment for the kid but the father would have been teaching him a valuable lesson for the future this way.
That said, just a tough call.

Agree 100%. And I'll add, If I did not kill the deer I would not want to take it from the person who did.
what would you tell people? Hey, this is the deer I shot in the leg and someother guy finished it off. cool story bro.
