The best thing possible would to somehow become independent of the UA system, become "The University of Birmingham"

This I agree with.

Dropping the football program, I do not. The exposure that schools get from a D-1 football program is priceless. Very few football programs actually make money, and the money that they do spend is worth it in the long run.

UAB is about to be kicked out of CUSA over not having a football program. How is that good for the school or the other sports? UAB has done very well in basketball and baseball in CUSA.

What exposure does UAB's football program bring the university besides a culture and reputation of failure? The best way for lesser known directional schools to gain national notoriety is through basketball and making the NCAA tournament on a consistent basis.

What exposure? Almost all their games are on ASN, which I had never even heard of until their game against Marshall. No one was watching, no one was going. The University is better off investing that money into academics and research.

In five years I'm willing to bet UAB will not be the only school to drop FBS football. Hell, UMASS considered going back to FCS after ONE year in FBS.

CUSA is a shell of its former self. It is basically the Sun Belt. It has zero schools with any basketball legitimacy remaining. The glory days of being in the same conference as Memphis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Houston, and Marquette are over. Losing CUSA affiliation and moving to a basketball centered conference would not be as big of a deal as you think.
