New Star Wars Trailer

So in the new Star Wars episode 7 trailer, they show a clip of(I'm assuming) a sith that has a light saber. What's with his light saber and the two beams coming from the side? I have a few theories but not exactly sure. Don't spoil anything for me

Someone on Reddit said the blade itself could be so powerful that it requires an exhaust. Another theory is it protects against a foe sliding his saber down and cutting off the hand thus making a hilt.

Except if that were the case, it'd chop the handle part of the saber, not the light part.
