I've noticed another trend in this thread, and not to sidetrack it but, is it a southern thing to take dates to football games?

Yes. Games are a huge social occasion. It varies from school to school and within cliques, but at a lot of schools in the South, having a date for the game is expected. Texas A&M is the best example:

Guys in the Cadet Corps are expected to bring a date to every game. That girl has to at least give him a peck on the cheek after every score. Even if the guy's got no shot with a girl, if they've been drinking all day, this level of physical contact (especially if the team's offense is scoring a ton of points) can often lead to some good times.

At LSU, at least in the Greek Community, the pledges all sit together with their frat, but the upperclassmen generally all have dates and usually sit near their frat or their date's sorority. If you don't have a date, you sit with your frat or sorority and f&%k with the pledges. This is pretty normal among most SEC schools.

FWIW, when I was a pledge at LSU we were supposed to bring a date to the game. We all got two tickets through the frat as well
