b.) pro-immigration reform: you could possibly win general but there's no way you're winning the primary.

A comprehensive plan that secures the border first, implements a robust temporary worker program, with e-Verify and stiff penalties on employers, severe restriction on entitlements, EITC, education access, and pretty much a ban on the guest workers having family here, combined with an end to birthright citizenship for children born to illegals (or guest workers) is a winnable platform at either the primary or general election, IMHO.

We're a nation of legal immigrants, not invaders. If we simultaneously recognize the desire of the portion of this population to work, employers' need for their services, the fact they're being exploited now, and the unsustainability of unfettered, unlimited illegal immigration on our health care, education and entitlement system, a rational solution, even complicated, will resonate with voters in 2016.

Yes, I really believe this and I believe it will be the default position (or something along very similar lines) for most GOP candidates on immigration.

tea party wing will sink a bill with any robust guest worker program

mainstream republican will sink a bill with any teeth to enforcement.

Immigration reform is going nowhere with a GOP led congress.
