With a buyout the idea is that you're paying a player a portion of his salary to release him. Usually his salary for that year minus what he's likely to be signed by a team as a free agent. Cap hit isn't stretched over multiple seasons.

For Gordon it would be his 15 mil salary next season over 3 years. So a 5mil cap hit every season, if he doesn't get signed by another team. If he is signed by another team, his per season salary for next year would be subtracted from the 15 mil. 3 mil per season salary would drop the cap hit down to 4 per year for 3 years. At this point, it has to be the best available solution to Gordon situation. The Pels would then be able to move on and sign a legit wing player to put next to Tyreke and Holiday.
