Nope.
Again, this is something that has gone on since the 50s
It has nothing to do with being associated with schools like SHSU or Montana and everything to do with school work taking precedence over sports.
Not sure why you can't accept that as a legitimate reason.

Notre Dame was the same way with bowls between the 20s until 67.

back in the day the Ivy League had a great QB. tore up the Ivy league and became an instant IvySports hall of famer. broke every pass record and a legend. after his playing career he became commisioner and changed the format to make sure no playoffs were ever played in the league
That mans name was Jonathan "Mox" Moxson and he first started the tradition of not playing in the playoffs by completely disbanding his whole high schoolfootball team after they won the district championship but never played another game despite Texas's rich history of playoff football

You didn't even provide a "legitimate reason" in this post

Bull...it's trying to say you are above that - ergo, elitism.
Notre Dame pulled the same crap - Notre Dame refused bowl bids from 1925-1970 until Ara threw a hissy-fit. Finally Notre Dame relented, releasing they couldn't win the national title (per usual) with just their regular season record.
There has always been an academic snobbery to post-season...like it's undignified for gentlemen.
