Back when the framers were still legislating, the only requirement to become a naturalized citizen were that you had to be a resident here for a few years, petition to a court, be of high moral character and pledge an oath to the US Constitution. (It was antiquated in that you had to be white, but noone here seems to admonish the founding fathers for being slaveowners and such, so that is a moot point)

LINK

This law was changed several times in subsequent years to extend the length of time you had to be a resident.

Anyone else here think that we need to model our system after Naturalization Act of 1790? Bring people out of the shadows and offer them a path to citizenship and a chance to participate in the greatest country in the world?

You can have lax imigration rules when there is no welfare state.

If you come and don't work, you don't eat.

So you believe all immigrants should be required to learn English?

Slavery was also legal, do you still want to go back in time, or do you think you could possibly admit things have changed?

Can we model our welfare system the same way as the system in place in 1790?

I mean, seriously dude. Did you not think "What's a little different".

My family came here in the late 1800's from England and Czech Republic.

They came with nothing and went right to work for Carnegie in the steel mills of Pittsburgh.

Guess what they didn't get when they got here? Free food, Free health care, free housing, etc

They did that all themselves.

Like I said, I would have ZERO problem with anyone coming here and paying their own way.

Once they start demanding to be part of the welfare system we have here (which they are doing) then I'm completely against it.

Pay your own way.

What "shadows" are you referring to? When you repeat that tired line, I suspect you have been spoon fed your beliefs.

The only shadows they are in are those produced by the crepe myrtles planted in front of Home Depot in Metairie.
