Immigration in the time of the Founding Fathers

Back when the framers were still legislating, the only requirement to become a naturalized citizen were that you had to be a resident here for a few years, petition to a court, be of high moral character and pledge an oath to the US Constitution. (It was antiquated in that you had to be white, but noone here seems to admonish the founding fathers for being slaveowners and such, so that is a moot point)
LINK
This law was changed several times in subsequent years to extend the length of time you had to be a resident.
Anyone else here think that we need to model our system after Naturalization Act of 1790? Bring people out of the shadows and offer them a path to citizenship and a chance to participate in the greatest country in the world?

You can have lax imigration rules when there is no welfare state.
If you come and don't work, you don't eat.

So you believe all immigrants should be required to learn English?

You don't?

Define required. If you mean by force, then no. If you mean that if they don't learn English then they will basically be relegated to second class citizens then yes.

I agree with Thomas Jefferson when he said immigration is "a right which nature has given to all men, of departing from the country in which chance, not choice, has placed them." and that America should be open those people.
I also agree with Thomas Paine that the United States should be "the asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty."

Slavery was also legal, do you still want to go back in time, or do you think you could possibly admit things have changed?

Yeah. I have no problem with them coming in if they cannot have access to the welfare system for least 10 years of paying taxes.

Can we model our welfare system the same way as the system in place in 1790?

As a country, we can make our welfare system however we want by passing laws and such.
The only thing that has to do with immigration is that it is part of American society today.

Dodged that question like a true democrat. I'm curious of your stance on this.

I mean, seriously dude. Did you not think "What's a little different".
My family came here in the late 1800's from England and Czech Republic.
They came with nothing and went right to work for Carnegie in the steel mills of Pittsburgh.
Guess what they didn't get when they got here? Free food, Free health care, free housing, etc
They did that all themselves.
Like I said, I would have ZERO problem with anyone coming here and paying their own way.
Once they start demanding to be part of the welfare system we have here (which they are doing) then I'm completely against it.
Pay your own way.

Obviously you are just another troll because you refuse to address the welfare issue.

Fantastic.
Doesn't mean they should get access to our benefits or completely ignore to learn the language dominantly spoken in the US.
Would you go live in Mexico and not learn spanish? Of course not. But you're probably not ignorant either.

They are coming to OUR country for a reason. If they want to communicate then learn the language. If I moved to China I wouldn't expect them to conform to my language. I would learn Chinese

The state of our welfare laws is an obvious variable in the formation of our immigration laws.
That was not a variable in 1790 so to bring up immigration laws from then and try to apply them to today's standards is foolish.

Of course. If you want to come here, learn the language. Don't make us make special considerations for you... you are the one that wanted to come here.
