x/5x = 3
5x/5x = 15
1 = 15
5x/5x = 15
1 = 15

I figured you knew I was kidding when I said 1 = 15, not x = 15.

The real answer is:
X x X/5 = 3X/X
X^2/5 = 3
X^2 = 15
X = sq rt of 15
As someone said above.
X x X/5 = 3X/X
X^2/5 = 3
X^2 = 15
X = sq rt of 15
As someone said above.

My study guide says the sqrt of 15 or -15.
Just trying to get an understanding as to how you came to this conclusion in case there is one similar on the test.
I am finally finishing my degree and have a few classes left, but it's been 10 years since highschool and algebra classes

All positive real numbers has two square roots, one positive square root and one negative square root. The positive square root is sometimes referred to as the principal square root.

no no
the square root of -15 involves i
it's +/- 3.9 (rounded, obviously)
if you square 2 negative numbers, you get a positive. if you square 2 positive numbers, you get a positive, so it can be either -3.9 or 3.9
