No they aren't. Athletes are pushed to perform generally by their own will for greatness, or their next contract. But they generally don't tie most or all of their salary to any performance based standard. Drew Brees gets most of his money whether he has a winning or losing season.

But the only way to get a new contract with more money and security is to perform and produce exceptionally well, especially when your existing contract is expiring, ala Ingram this year.
