The Danish band that originally made extreme metal vocalist King Diamond famous. Along with Venom, they helped launch black metal. Diamond's immense falsetto vocals have always been difficult to access for most metal fans, but their guitar work is superb. Lars Urlich of Metallica absolutely loves them. Their first two albums are considered some of the greatest metal releases ever.

The biggest band to break out of the San Francisco thrash metal scene not named Metallica. Most thrash fans consider them more suitable for the Big 4 label than Anthrax. Their first four albums are thrash masterpieces and they deserve every bit of respect they receive.

Founders of grindcore. Translation: pure noise and chaos. Although they helped give rise to other extreme metal bands and genres, I consider them to be extreme punk more than anything. Jim Carrey has a pretty funny bit about them (he was a big grindcore and death metal fan).
