Even Inception, his most misunderstood film, it doesn't matter whether the top falls or stays up. All that matters is that Cobb has found peace with himself and ready to move on with his kids.

You could say the same is true about Interstellar. It doesnt matter if he ever finds Brand or if he dies trying. What matters is he has made peace with his daughter and has gone out into the unknown where he belongs. Exploring the universe in search of something better for the human race.

The world needs those people. I believe this is Nolan's call to all of us to re-engerize the space exploration program.

To go beyond what we think is rational and investigate whats possible.

You're just oblivious to how large the universe is. If the sun were the size of a white blood cell, then the Milky Way would be the size of the United States. And that's one star in one of hundreds of billions of galaxies. Telling him to go back and find Brand would at best be taunting him for abandoning her for Brand, and at worst telling him to kill himself. I don't think that ship could make it to Proxima Centauri, nevertheless another galaxy they have no idea where or even when it is. If the wormhole is open, then we don't have this problem. It completely changes the context of that scene to have it closed.

No we don't need idiots who go and blindly kill themselves. The space program should have realistic goals, not just lauch a person into interstellar space in a random direction and somehow hope he lands on an inhabitable planet without dying. It's preposterous.

That's like a school guidance counselor telling her students to frick studying and going to college and just play the lottery. I guess there's a one in a billion chance, which are significantly higher of him finding Brand, so frick it.
