I think it has a lot more to do with the fact that what Black Americans want from the GOP are probably things that the GOP fundamentally opposes.
And no, before you say "equal rights," I'm talking about dropping opposition to affirmative action, dropping plans to curb entitlement spending, etc.

In a nutshell, that's exactly what Nixon's political strategist Kevin Phillips said in a 1970 New York Times article:
