Fantastic write-up, bravo.
I really enjoyed how the last season brought everything full circle from Season 1 on through.
This was just a great show, great writing, great acting, and great story.

Two issues.
One, the relationship between the Commodore and Gillian. I am not so sure Nucky handing her over to the Commodore was the worst thing. The Commodore and Gillian became a couple and he took care of her. That's what Gillian wanted. When Jimmy was taking over AC she was so proud of him. He was living up to the Commodore's expectations and taking back from Nucky what was rightfully their family's.
Two, Nucky killing Jimmy. It was a mercy killing. Jimmy had fought Nucky and lost. He was backed into a corner. He was already dead inside having died in the battlefields of Europe during WW1. He told Richard as much when he went to meet Nucky knowing full well he woudl die there.
That's why with all these twists and turns the ending is not sitting right with me. At the time these seasons were happening it was not portrayed that Nucky had done something terrible to Gillian or that Nucky wasn't doing Jimmy a favor by killing him.

it wasn't portrayed as anything...it could've been he married a 13 year old girl, but it was just one of those weird things...all we knew is that nucky plucked her out of the crowd at the commodore's behest...now what we know that we didn't when just the factual information was given in one sentence of dialogue
1. the commodore was a serial pedophile
2. the commodore "hurt" children
3. Nucky's relationship with Gillian at the time. she wasn't a stranger
4. WHY nucky handed her to the commodore
5. Nucky knew what she was in for when he gave her to the commodore
6. Nucky LIED to her.
It was all very revealing and after 2 seasons of wondering why Gillian was in the show, I now appreciate it. She is the emotional glue and that one event between her and nucky set all of the events (season 1-5) into motion. It simply doesn't exist without her

The ending doesn't sit well with me either. Tommy killing Nucky might have been some slight justice but it was misplaced and now Tommy will probably die or go to prison for a long time.
Now that I'm thinking about it, tommy went to live with Richards girl up north right? I would have thought that he was "saved" from this life and would be a good guy. I hoped the cycle of violence wouldn't continue with him. Sad

even when being shot to death, nucky continues to ruin that family

. Nucky killing Jimmy - it was already bad enough. We knew Nucky gave Gillian to the commodore, he even included the man who murdered jimmy's wife...but seeing at how close he was to Gillian, and what he sold her out for and who he sold her out to (we knew it was the commodore, but you see what a true POS he was) it reignites my contempt for nucky. But also, every step Nucky took towards the edge was in relation to Gillian and Jimmy. He totally fricked this family over to make it (sparing jimmy could have been an act of redemption, but he doubled down on his reprehensible actions in relation to the darmodys)In all other things, with the exception of killing Margaret's husband, he had such a pragmatic approach, it bothers me that after what he did to Gillian, he still murdered jimmy.
was not part of the original storyline but they wanted to fire Michael Pitt and wanted his character dead so he could never return to the show

I've read that but it's never been confirmed
if you follow the events to their natural end, nucky killing jimmy makes the most sense, there's just factors like jimmy helping nucky out in the end, jimmy's wife being murdered, and their previously close relationship that make it shocking
winter said that's where the writing brought him, and that to not kill jimmy would be wrapping things up in a nice bow, which is the kind of television he finds boring. He also said that the events in season 2 would bear no consequences and thus make it irrelevant

Should it be assumed that Nuckie had a chance to "save himself" when Gillian asked for help?
That his refusal to help after promising to "always look after" her is what finally sealed his fate?

It really did tie her in so well in the overarching story.

Did we ever get an explanation Narcisse working with the Feds. I can remember at the end of season 4 him being interrogated.

I don't know, damage had been done by the time he read her letter
quote:tony soprano was a guy looking for himself, there was a lot of self discovery, he was a full blown psychopath at the end, he was lost, but I find tony more likeable than nucky. Nucky is a fricking prick any way you dice it, and yet...I didn't take satisfaction in his murder, he wasn't 100% evil, but he can't even justify his actions to himself, and he doesn't seem to care to... I really don't know how to feel about him just yet

I forgot about that, I took satisfaction in his murder
I think the two most likeable guys in the whole series (besides jimmy) were Luciano and lansky...anatol yusef stole every scene he was in

Possibly. I look back to the previous episode and this scene:
LINK
She says, "I tell myself I am sane… and finally nothing at all.
If you would come, if you would sit beside me… You are the only one left who knows me. Show me the same kindness now that you once showed an orphan girl. There is forgiveness for everyone. I turn to you on my knees. I beg you. Please help me.
Tommy could have killed Nuckie whenever he wanted, why wait?
I will be honest and say I haven't followed all of the backdrop and off TV scoop, so maybe I am off but it seems like she offered him a way out. I guess I'm in the camp that believes she orchestrated the entire thing using Tommy on the outside.

Agreed on Lansky and Jimmy, and the actor playing Luciano did a great job, but something just made me hate his character. I really liked Chalky

interesting... what a damn good series
I think he was torn. I don't know. At times, Nucky was trying to take care of him, and was mesmerizing...murder isn't something a teenager in his position just commits to without hesitation. I don't even know if he wanted to murder him the whole time.
I think "this is the part where I leave you" or whatever nucky said just tugged at the right emotion...and he clipped him.
you don't realize it until you've seen it all, but even in the end, nucky is a fricking loathsome prick. Even though I was always rooting for him, in the end, I loved that Luciano forced him out (which was a given, and they really kind of laid that outcome out even further with the conversation between torrio and nucky) I was stunned afterwards, and I don't know why because nucky is such a piece of shite

I would've liked to have seen the transformation from impulsive hoodlum to pragmatic gangster who orchestrates something phenomenal.
We definitely see the events that lead to that transformation, but with the skip in time, we're deprived of seeing it happen...the only consequence of the time leap IMO. Rothstein dying off screen was the right way to go.

he was murdered by some random schmuck he owed a gambling debt to, the performance was so good, I wasn't looking forward to such a common and undignified end...getting killed apart from the storyline just kind of sucks because he was so awesome
