I mean, that's a bit of an overstatement. An album doesn't have to be GOAT level (like your two examples) to be important in a given year. Like Tom says in his article, the songs from this album will dominate pop radio for the next two years. That does make it an "important" album for better or worse.
I kind of like the whole embracing of pop music thing as it's pretty representative of the dichotomy in which I live. When we're in the car with the family, we'll move between pop radio singalongs then into different territory like Phosphorescent, Gregory Alan Isakov, Mutual Benefit, War on Drugs, Band of Horses, etc...
I don't really have a problem with pop music other than the fact that some songs become so overplayed that I have to change the station immediately when they come on.

it's commerce (a product) vs art IMO
when people are making music for the sole purpose of it being in a commercial I don't care for it.
