Any suggestions, I'm thinking of purchasing a Remington 870 Express Compact Jr 20 gauge for my son.

Was my first gun as a kid. Still have it and occasionally hunt with it.

bad idea, sorry. its still a 20 ga but smaller/lighter = greater felt recoil. unless he is bigger than average. i bought a used 1100 and cut it down to fit for my oldest sons first shotgun after breaking him in on a .410

Mossberg 500 Bantam 20 gauge. I bought one for my son last year. It comes with several recoil pads as he grows into it.

I have both 870 Express Compact and Compact Jr for my boys. The Compact was a little long for my 10 year old so I bought a Compact Jr. I did have to put a Cheek-Eez pad on it because the stock was hitting his cheek pretty good. He shoots the hell out of it.

I considered cutting down the regular compact stock but was concerned about weight distribution (I guess you could put some lead shot or something in the buttstock to compensate)

I started off with a single shot 20 gauge. Then moved to an 870 express jr. That 870 is tough to beat. It survived plenty of seasons in the duck blind and great squirrel hunting gun. I still pull it out every dove season. Fun gun to shoot.
