The kidneys are "stunned" and may or may not work again. You can't live without kidneys (or dialysis). I shouldn't have put it quite as black and white as I did. It's more like "we think it's more likely it will progress to the point of danger than recovering by itself at this point."
So they're not pulling him from the brink of death, they're worried about him headed down that pathway and cutting it off at the head.

Did they have him on low dose dopamine or any med to raise his blood pressure during treatment for sepsis. sepsis doesn't always present with hypotension that can cause renal ischemia. that's why I suggested rhabdo.
If that is the case, the kidneys are usually the first organs to go in shock.
