I was there sitting in the curve of the upper deck of the south end zone. It was a warm and very humid night. Ole Miss kicked a field goal in the first quarter. Neither team could move the ball very well against the strong defenses that both teams had. Coach Vaught didn't think the Tigers could score against his defense and he was probably right. He started punting on 3rd down rather than risk a turnover that could put the Tigers in a position to score. The Jake Gibbs punt slightly out kicked the coverage. It looked like the Rebels did not expect Cannon to field the punt after it bounced. But it took a great hop right to Cannon and he was able to avoid the first couple tacklers. He broke several tackles in the first 25 to 30 yards and faked out the last Rebel Gibbs around midfield right in front of the Rebels bench and Coach Vaught. Cannon scored with 10 minutes to go. The Rebels then held the ball and drove down the field until Cannon and Rabb stopped Elmore at the one on 4th and goal with under a minute to go. The goal line stand was in the south end right in front of my seat. Both teams were completely exhausted when the game ended. I was only 13 but it was a great game that you never forget if you were lucky enough to be there!
