It's not just the "ghetto", whatever that means to you. If you look at the list of EBRP high schools (non magnet), none of them would provide my child with a great education. All of them get D's and C's.

If your child wasn't blessed with a higher IQ, or if he couldn't get enrolled in a gifted or magnet program; you have few options.

Magnet School parents have a great situation, and if I were in their shoes I'd probably fight tooth and nail to keep the status quo that has worked so well for thousands of kids like theirs.

If I were king of the Parish, I might suggest a parish wide magnet program for any kid that qualifies academically, and then local districts for those who do not qualify or who elect not to participate. That might work, but I'm not king and right now that's not legal.

If I were King I would drop the freaking HAMMER. I'd clean house on administration, teachers and most importantly students. My delineation would not be GRADES and IQ, but classroom behavior. Bad kids NEED to be isolated. Not dumb kids. Warehouse the bad kids, IDGAF.

But don't punish the good kids because they live in a shithole and their parents lack the sense or resources to get them out. St. George will be the educational death knell for them. An unintentional negative consequence of your good intentions and desire to topple the status quo-More despair in North Baton Rouge.

I appreciate and respect your views Brother. I know we disagree, but I understand your viewpoint on St. George. The internet is not the best forum for great discussions because it is difficult to cede points and easy to seize on a word or a phrase and misrepresent the authors intent.

I think we need total reform. Starting with the teachers Unions and making our way down to kindergarten students and everything in-between. A one-sized approach doesn't work. We need a multi-tiered approach that not only rewards, but PUNISHES. Give the ones who ruin things for the good kids a taste of reality. We shortchange our children when we coddle the perps-in-training. We need to put Edward James Olmos in charge.
