Unless Mr. Owens looked like a 7-year old girl...no. A criminal possibly being in a building does not give the police carte blanche to assault innocent people

I meant the fact that the swat team was there. If mr Owens wouldn't have killed the teen there wouldn't have been a cop in the house who couldn't properly handle his weapon. It's a sad, tragic accident, if I read the story correctly.

It was an accidental discharge, correct?

Mr. Owens shouldn't have killed anyone either...but there are better ways to apprehend criminals than to go all gung-ho with innocents in the house.
Why not do proper research and maybe wait to violently raid a place when she's at school maybe?

LT- from the second article I posted- apparently it was a duplex, and the suspect was living upstairs. They got the wrong apartment.

quote:

Appearing this morning on WJR-AM 760 with host Paul W. Smith, Fieger elaborated on the footage, which he says contradicts the department's preliminary account, and suggested the Special Response Team's original search warrant covered only the lower level apartment where Aiyana was shot, not the upper-level apartment where they apprehended the murder suspect they were seeking.

It gets worse-
quote:

Following the shooting, various outlets reported that neighbors told police there were children in the house and showed them toys in the front yard. At Sunday's press conference, Assistant Police Chief Ralph Godbee refused to comment on those reports while the department moved forward with its investigation. "It's worse than that," Fieger said. "It shows this in the video. There's a gentleman by the name of Mr. Robinson who lives in the home. He was out walking his dogs when they arrived. They took him and threw him to the ground and stood on his neck. He said, 'There are children living in the home. There are children in the home.' And just after that they walk up on the porch and throw an incendiary grenade into it. So it's worse than even you know." Flash grenade landed on Aiyana as she slept: Detroit police confirmed they threw a flash grenade into Aiyana's home as a diversionary tactic before ramming the door and entering during the execution of a high-risk, no-knock search warrant. Godbee said this week officers believed the suspect they were seeking could be armed and dangerous. In the wake of the shooting, Aiyana's father told the Detroit Free Press the flash grenade landed on the couch where Aiyana was sleeping, possibly burning her before she was shot. Fieger, who has met with the family, suggested that account was accurate.

They knew kids were in the house, still went in. Protect and serve themselves.

Do the cops have to bust down every door? Can there be another way to do this?

One alternative to capturing the bad guy upstairs would be to wait for him to exit and arrest him outside the house. But, you don't get to use your military gear under that scenario. And, if you can't use that stuff, you might be criticized for buying it in the first place.
