re: Women want equal pay? Stop babysitting

Another issue is the fact that private sector employees don't have the right to comp time or flex time. That's a disaster for women with children.
Need to take Thursday afternoon off to take your kids to the doctor? Too bad! You don't get paid. You can't work 44 hours next week to make up for it.

with the exception of a sweatshop, or some sort of bogus job that only hires "contractors" i.e., they employer doesn't withhold anything from the check or pay unemployment tax, etc., I doubt you could provide many, if any examples of a man being paid more than a women, doing the same job, same employer, same length of time with the company, certainly not one that's not either in litigation or about to be

Litigation is the primary way that private citizens seek redress in this society, is it not?

any reason why you should? I don't, my company also has a list of people that they deem close enough to you to warrant taking time off to go to their funeral(unpaid,) they pretty much encourage you to use sick or vacation days for personal matters

unfortunately so, but my point is that it's is a myth that women are paid less than men to do the same job, again qualifying by saying same job, same employer, same length of time on with employer, same status(full time, part time, seasonal, etc.)

yep ... always pay as little as possible for a babysitter. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

If you pay a spanish speaking immigrant $20 an hour to cut your grass you may be the dumbest person in the country

Right. I get it. But this is a sign that things are improving. Its a good thing.

things have been improved for decades, the myth is perpetuated by people that have never experienced this type of discrimination, but have had it drilled into them that they are being discriminated against

Well now I think you're venturing into the territory of taking it too far. These things only started to change in the 1990s. Its only been 25 years or so. I don't see how you can make the claim that the situation has been equitable "for decades" when the process of change began 25 years ago.

link?
don't know how you've picked that as a starting point, but it doesn't go back far enough, I'm nearing the end of my career, grew up in in a family owned business, have two older sisters that between them are architect, lawyer,CPA, and engineer, have never been around discrimination except "reverse" discrimination, in my work place

Posted by jimbeam on 10/18 at 9:05 am to kingbob I always am so disappointed to hear my friends talking about this, and actually believing it. If you can pay women 30% less or whatever, why not ONLY hire women?
B/C you get what you pay for. You'd have to hire more of them to get the same amount of work done.
Just one situation where men =\= women is below....
I have yet to have a man promise to return to work after a birth of a child (that was paid for by the company's insurance no less) and then never return. Yet this is an all to often occurance with female employees.

Idk, was just my perception that the PC train really got rolling in the 90s.

This is tangential to the conversation. So there are things women can't do. Granted. But we're talking about how much they get paid for the same work that men do. So the oil rig jobs are not really part of the debate at all.
Yes it is. The "equal pay" argument and the bullshite math that goes with it incorporates ALL jobs done by men and women, and lumps them into this argument. If you limit the argument to jobs that men and women both do, there is no pay gap. The gap exists because men do higher paying jobs.

kind of a separate issue than what we're talking about, a lot of the "set aside" programs did get their start in the late 80's, early 90's though

If you need baby sitters, then don't have kids.

There's a pay gap in high paying jobs for women with the same occupation as men with the same experience
A big four cpa firm is about to pay a lot of money for it. Congrats to your lawyer, architecture sister though

I say BS, offer up some data.

So anecdotal evidence isn't enough for you? Can only be used to support your post?
I'm on my phone heading to BR, so this article will have to do
And some of what y'all have said is true, but there is still a pay gap. Women demand more flexibility and that cost $$

Indeed, of the 534 professions listed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women on average earn more than men in only seven of them, a group composed of 1.5 million working women, or only 3 percent of the full-time female work force.
