The Avengers didn't destroy New York at all.

They broke some windows, but that is about it.
Because those giant snake aliens conveniently crashed on the street instead of into buildings.

Even if they had crashed into buildings, unless the Hulk threw them into them, they had no hand in destroying it.

Superman kinda threw Zod through buildings, flew through buildings, and just generally destroyed Metropolis.

The Avengers don't have that power, except for Hulk and Thor, and both of them were fighting enemies who didn't have the destructive power of Zod.

They couldn't have done that kind of damage to New York even if they wanted to.

Overall though, I think Superman's hand in Metropolis' destruction is far overplayed by critics. 90+% of the damage was due to the world engine thing.
