Superman kinda threw Zod through buildings, flew through buildings, and just generally destroyed Metropolis.
The Avengers don't have that power, except for Hulk and Thor, and both of them were fighting enemies who didn't have the destructive power of Zod.
They couldn't have done that kind of damage to New York even if they wanted to.
Overall though, I think Superman's hand in Metropolis' destruction is far overplayed by critics. 90+% of the damage was due to the world engine thing.
