Nothing I read in that article is terribly different from the relationship between football, the local economy, and the police departments in Ann Arbor, Madison, State College, or any number of university towns.

I suppose if they had used Tallahassee as an example of a larger issue pertaining to college athletics, and not implied that it's an isolated case, I would trust the NY Times's motives more.

The NY Times has a national audience. Washington Post, LA Times, etc. do as well. If you're dismissing their article because you think they only service one city then I can't help you.
