I think Kansas City on the Mo side was originally named just Kansas. To avoid confusion when Kansas became a state, the named changed to Kansas City.

The drive is literally a few minutes, either by I-70 interstate, or by the viaduct. You can see the other city quite clearly no matter what side of the state line you are on. Maybe a couple miles seperate them, if that.

Sounds like it's similar to Memphis, TN and West Memphis, AR.

The big river separates the two.
