All of the radical change that occurred during that time was bound to occur. As societies advance and economies modernize, you see racial/sexual equality happen.
At the same time... When social change occurs, there always will be discord/problems associated with people fighting change. There will always be unintended negative consequences.
What happened in the 60's --good and bad-- had to happen as a natural progression of society, so I don't think you can really say it was good or bad for society because there is no stopping social progress.
I hope that made sense.
