To be fair, Americans tend to be afraid of anything that has 50% chance of death. We are accustomed to much higher recovery rates.

I get it, and I would be too. That said, 50% is probably very conservative in the current environment for someone who is otherwise healthy and has relatively early access to supportive care.

My concern would be in the scenario where we had a widespread (even if not truly massive) outbreak, and healthcare resources were just overwhelmed. But looking at the what, 10000 cases in horrid African conditions makes that unlikely.
