The parents that i know personally, its the MAIN reason kids are sent there. The academics are a bonus.

it seems like you are the old folksy religious type so I wouldn't be surprised if that is why you associated with parents like that.

But in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, kids are sent to Catholic schools for the academics, as well as for family reasons (Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa) all went to the same school

ETA: They also just happen to be Catholic

The parents you know might be, but Catholic school kids are NOT stereotypically religious. Catholic religion in general is a whole other world from protestants. Only the holiest of the holy even really display their religion in the Catholic community.
