You are under the impression there were not primaries and debates in 1980 prior to Oct 29th? Really?
I'm not even going to address the fallacy of Reagan being behind. One anomalous poll. There were numerous other polls that had him up 2/3 points prior. We could compare their post convention bounces, etc. Everyone that was of age remembers Carter refusing to debate Kennedy and his indifference to debates. His demand that Anderson not be included while Reagan demanded he be included. And we all remember Reagan acceding to Carter's demands. And winning.
